Kelly Taphouse's Journey, The Inspiration Behind MOVE

Kelly Taphouse is one of the most passionate fitness professionals with over 15 years’ experience in the industry. Although she was not a natural athlete who played high school sports that did not stop Kelly from starting her fitness journey later in her twenties.  Her initial passion for fitness began as a means to help cope with anxiety.

Kelly’s hard work and love for fitness quickly grew and she became a top competitive fitness model achieving success across North America.  She was featured regularly in the popular fitness magazines, obtained sponsorship from a top nutrition supplement company and promoted fitness for leading companies at the largest conventions however, at the same time she began to develop unhealthy habits that included overtraining, excessive cardio and strict dieting.  She also began to struggle with body image disorder as her unsustainable levels of exercise and caloric restriction caused her weight to fluctuate greatly, sometimes upwards of 20lbs after a competition.  This struggle led Kelly to better educate herself about how she was compromising her health on the inside. She soon quit competitions and started her career at Goodlife Fitness as a Personal Trainer, PT Club Manager and PT Area Manager.

Like so many other women, Kelly struggled to get back in shape after the birth of her son, having gained 70lbs, and found she had lost her motivation to be fit and healthy. It was at this time she decided to stop dieting and accept and understand her new body once and for all. She slowly began to eat better with balance, train based upon better movement and getting stronger, and truly fell in love with healthy fitness. By focusing on feeling good, instead of losing weight, she became happier in her own skin.  This new approach to fitness combined with the challenge she faced in finding a fitness center in the area that truly provided an experience catering towards women and convenience for moms, inspired the creation of MOVE fitness club.

Kelly has helped hundreds of people find and follow their own fitness journey. Her undeniable infectious energy and passion for fitness can only be rivalled by her love for her son Parker.  It is her mission to help women love their bodies by challenging them to become stronger and healthier for the all the right reasons.

MOVE well, get strong, and be your best. Looking good is just a side effect!

Why We Love Her:

As a former gymnast and handstand queen, she loves to move and is always looking for the next fun new challenge to try!

She first discovered her passion for health and fitness after a major turning point in her life when she was diagnosed with cancer as a young adult. Prior to that she had struggled with losing weight, trying diet after diet, but it wasn't until her outlook on health changed that she saw so many positive changes in her life. After a full recovery she became dedicated to living the healthiest and most enjoyable life she could, and now has a vision to help other women do the same.

Jenny Thomson  |  Group coach & Personal Trainer

Why We Love Her:

Small in Stature but mighty in spirit, Jenny is #nevernotdancing! She loves to lift heavy things and hit stuff (aka practice Muay Thai Kickboxing) in her free time!

Full of energy since a (very) young age, Jenny found herself enrolled in sports every night of the week when she was little. Ranging from Karate to swimming lessons to baseball, she was constantly moving. After playing varsity volleyball and softball in high school, Jenny decided to pursue her passion for movement and health through a concurrent Bachelor of Physical and Health Education and Bachelor of Life Sciences at Queen’s University. She began coaching and personal training during her time at Queen’s and never looked back. More recently she completed a Master’s Degree in Fitness Science at York University, followed by a Doctor of Chiropractic Degree at Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College. She is currently completing a Chiropractic Sport Sciences Residency through the Royal College of Chiropractic Sport Sciences of Canada. Jenny’s passion and mission is to empower women in all areas of their lives through evidence-based, quality movement and strength training.

Why We Love Her:

As a recent graduate with a Bachelors in Social Work and Youth & Children at Wilfred Laurier University, Liz without a doubt is a favourite with the kids!

Her love for working with children came from her own life experiences struggling mentally and emotionally with family loss, but that did not stop this strong-willed girl too keep going forward.

After losing her father at an early age, she was raised with five other siblings by her single mother who later fell ill with cancer. Throughout her struggles and being adopted from a young age, Liz came to understand the real meaning of family through her support from school, family and friends and has grown a passion to help others in need. “I was given a chance by being adopted but not all kids get the help they deserve. I want to feel like I am making a difference in people’s lives.”  She has definitely started to make a difference here for the MOVE family!

On a side, Liz was a track all star throughout high school and continues to volunteer at the Children Aid Society of Toronto.
